A Soulfilled Retreat

Step into a world of bush adventures and wonder at Bayete Zulu Lodge, where an open-armed welcome awaits you. On arrival, the friendly staff greeted me with warm smiles and an even warmer blanket to chase the afternoon chill away. The reserve has three bespoke chalets; each one has a spacious patio overlooking the dam and an oversized, plush bed. The en-suite includes all the needed amenities: a shower, a his-and-hers vanity, and an added touch was the provided essential toiletries. But for sure, the star of the show was the beautiful outdoor shower and bathtub that offered a spectacular view. Soaking in the outdoor tub was one of the most relaxing and romantic experiences I’ve ever had!

The dining was exceptional; from breakfast to dinner, every meal was meticulously prepared and served. They asked about my dietary requirements beforehand, so they even had almond milk and decaffeinated coffee available for me! While having breakfast one morning, in true bush fashion, a beautiful male nyala decided to join us. Dinners were fabulous, and meals like a hot potjie on a chilly night were exactly what I needed to warm the belly and ensure a restful night’s sleep!

The game drives were my favourite. Getting to see the sunrise over the trees and through the mist was surreal! Our amazing game ranger was prepared for the cold winter morning, providing blankets to keep all of us warm. Every drive showed us something new: we saw a cheetah with a fresh kill, elephants playing in the mud, buffalo, leopards, lions, hippos, and so much more!

One of the signature attractions was meeting and interacting with rescue elephants Rambo and Rachel. They have called Bayete home for 25 years. Rachel is apparently a little impatient; she playfully will pick up sand and throw it at you because she wants more food! Rambo was the elephant I fed; he lifted his trunk to the top of his head, opened his mouth, and stuck out his tongue for his food. It was again one of those experiences – touching and interacting with a huge elephant up close – that becomes a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Four beautiful nights were not nearly enough for me to see everything this charming place had to offer. The entire team at Bayete Private took such good care of me; just a thank you is almost not enough. It honestly felt like a dream come true, and I look forward to doing it again!
