Editors Letter April 2015

Most people tend to think of money when you speak about investment, dividends or returns. It’s just how we’re wired. We use wealth, an abundance of valuable possessions or money, to gauge or social status and we’ve even hooked our personal well being and health into it – we get sick when we don’t have enough!

But what if I told you there is something more precious than money that also yields dividends or returns? Something that is easily attainable but even more difficult to manage than money. It’s given to all of us but some get more than others and just like money, most of us squander it. We definitely don’t manage our returns on it and seldom, if ever, question what dividends we’ve earned from it. Figured out what it is yet? It’s TIME.

Yes, we’ve all read the books on time management and we’ve all seen the video clips that work out how much real time you have after sleeping, brushing your teeth and all the other mundane tasks of life but have you really ever given thought to what type of returns you’re getting on your time? You have so little of it, it’s more precious than money, and what you do with it will be more valued when you’re gone than the money and assets you leave behind.

Recently I listened to Dylan Jahnig, pastor at Linc Church, preach about breathing room (a great message available on podcast from their site) and during the message I realised that I too have set my sights on the pursuit of money more than managing my deminishing asset of time. I’m smart, I understand financial structures, deal making, returns and PE multiples but I’m a lot less wise when it comes to checking my returns on my time invested. How I fix that is perhaps for a story in future, or perhaps not, but it is something that needs fixing. Why do I talk about it in my editors letter? Well I woke up early to write it and it was dark outside. A few weeks ago it was light. I realised time is moving quick this year and if I had to make a list of where I was investing my time I know there would be some items that won’t yield returns….how would you’re list look? What returns are you getting from your time.

In this edition of the Ballito mag there are some great stories of people investing time with great reward. Check out our interview with Bruce Rencken as he says he and his brothers journey as shop keepers to landlords. We look at the Ballito Pro and confirm it’s staying in town plus a whole lot more. It’s a great edition and it is well worth the read!

Until our next edition

God Bless
